Very Special Arts Celebrates 20 Years
Very Special Arts Celebrated its 20th birthday on May 19th. The event was held at the UC Agricultural Center and over 300 special needs students from around Union County participated. Porter Ridge art teachers Jan Kerley and Nicole Crowley assisted Parkwood and Piedmont High schools in organizing the event.
Porter Ridge was represented well with two of our special needs students performing the National Anthem and leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Ms. Crowley had 8 students write and perform a skit for the opening ceremonies which helped get the audience pepped up for the day's event. Porter Ridge had 39 students helping as buddies for the guest students and working the four art booths PR created. There were many creative art project booths for the children as well as a hay ride, a petting zoo, and a small train ride. There was dancing, singing, and laughing throughout the venue.
Ms. Kerley said, "We are so proud of our students and know they learn much about being good citizens and giving back to the community. It's the life lessons they will take with them when they graduate from Porter Ridge that are so important."
