Peyton Thomas wins People's Choice STEM award
Congratulations to Peyton Thomas, who recently won the People’s Choice STEM Award. The award recognizes 6th–12th grade students and teachers from WTVI's 13-county viewing area who exhibit excellence in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
Peyton's project, “A Glimpse of the Human Heart,” is a working model of the human heart including the blood flow to the body, back from the body to the heart, to the lungs and from the lungs back to the heart.
Peyton created the project for Mrs. Robles’ science class, then entered it into the regional competition. Peyton also created a video entry describing & demonstrating her project. This was evaluated by a panel from Central Piedmont Community College for its excellence in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The thirteen-county viewing area voted for their favorite project with over 1,000 votes being cast. Peyton was the clear winner. Her project captured the essence of STEM and was voted People’s Choice.
Peyton received this award May 22, 2014 at CPCC’s central campus and the ceremony was broadcast on PBS Charlotte May 23, 2014 at 8 pm. If you missed the broadcast, you can watch it at http://www.wtvi.org/blog/2014/05/12/stem-awards/.
