2 PdMS Odyssey of the Mind Teams Compete at World Finals in Iowa
Last week 2 Piedmont Middle OM teams competed at World Finals in Ames, Iowa. Each team of 7 students had prepared for the big competition over the course of 7 months. To reach World Finals, each team had to place 1st or 2nd in their problem at the regional level and then state level. The Driver's Test team placed 1st at both State and Regional competitions. The It's How We Rule team placed 2nd at the regional competition and 1st at the State competition.
In preparation for their trip to Iowa, both teams did a tremendous job fundraising for the opportunity to attend and compete. We are very grateful to all of our sponsors and those who donated. Shirts were made for team members and coaches with a list of sponsors on the back. Once the big trip came, students packed up all props and costumes to head to Iowa State University.
While in Iowa students had the opportunity to meet students and teams from many different states and countries around the world including Singapore, Poland, Russia, Togo, Mexico, Switzerland, China and many more. Teams, states and countries made pins that they brought to World Finals in order to trade with others. Pin trading was a big deal that many students carved a lot of time out for with several pin sets from different states/countries becoming quite popular. Students were also able to participate in an exciting opening ceremony with a "parade of nations and states" (as you would see in the Olympics), an international festival, creativity festival, compete in spontaneous, watch teams from around the US and across the world perform their solutions to different OM problems (and see how they solved the same problem in a different way) and of course participate in the awards ceremony. It was a great trip for all with a lot of new, fun and exciting memories.
Our Piedmont teams placed very well. The Driver's Test team was 4th out of 54 teams and the It's How We Rule team placed 8th out of 55 teams! What an incredible accomplishment! Within the top 10 in the world! Truly a job well done and everyone is very proud of what the teams were able to do in only our 2nd year of OM at Piedmont Middle. North Carolina had 15 top 10 finishes - 6 of which were in the top 3.
