Two Piedmont Middle OM Teams do well at World Finals
Two Piedmont Middle Odyssey of the Mind teams recently competed at World Finals in Ames, Iowa, and placed in the top 10 in the world.
Each team of seven students had prepared for the big competition over the course of seven months.
To reach World Finals, each team had to place first or second in their problem at the regional level and then the state level.
The “Driver's Test” team placed first at both state and regional competitions. The “It's How We Rule” team placed second at the regional competition and first at the state competition.
In preparation for their trip to Iowa, both teams did a tremendous job fundraising for the opportunity to attend and compete.
The teams and coaches said they were very grateful to all of the sponsors and those who donated. Shirts were made for team members and coaches with a list of sponsors on the back.
Once the big trip came, students packed up all props and costumes to head to Iowa State University.
While in Iowa, students had the opportunity to meet students and teams from many different states and countries around the world including Singapore, Poland, Russia, Togo, Mexico, Switzerland and China.
Teams from all over the world made pins that they brought to World Finals in order to trade with others. Organizers said pin trading was a very big deal.
Many students carved out a lot of time for the trading of pins. Pin sets from different states and various countries became quite popular.
Students were also able to participate in an exciting opening ceremony with a "parade of nations and states" similar to what one would see in the Olympics.
There was an international festival, creativity festival, an opportunity to compete in spontaneous exercises, watching teams from around the United States and across the world perform their solutions to different OM problems.
It was interesting to see how they solved the same problem in a different way. Students were also very excited to participate in the awards ceremony.
Coaches and students alike said it was a great trip for all, with a lot of new, fun and exciting memories being brought home.
The Piedmont Middle teams placed very well. The Driver's Test team was fourth out of 54 teams and the It's How We Rule team placed eighth out of 55 teams.
It is an incredible accomplishment to place within the top 10 in the world, especially considering that it's only the second year that Piedmont has had its OM teams.
