Students at Parkwood Middle School have once again proven their academic excellence.

Students from the seventh and eighth grade recently competed in the National Science and National Social Studies League competitions.

The seventh and eighth grade Science team ranked second in the nation with a combined team score of 422. Not to be outdone, the eighth-grade Social Studies team took first place in the nation with a score of 479.

Respectively, the two teams competed against their peers at over 80 schools from various states around the country.

The National Science League and National Social Studies League exams are administered once a year to students from grade two through 12. The middle school Science exam measures students’ knowledge of scientific terms, theories, and practices.

The Social Studies exam tests students’ knowledge of American history from the colonial to the modern era. The contests serve as a valuable supplement to school programs and aid schools in helping their students improve their reading comprehension and problem solving skills.

For the last 31 years, this national competition has generated student participation and excitement.

Competing for the past several years, the Parkwood Middle School Science team had taken the first-place spot two years ago.

Bouncing back from a seventh-place finish last year, the seventh- and eighth-grade team reclaimed a top three spot with their performance this year. Participating in the competition for only the second time this year, the Social Studies team was able to improve from the number two spot last year to first place this year.

Sponsors of the Science team, Jordan Marmara, Susan Marshall, and Krystle Navey are extremely proud of the work from the seventh- and eighth-grade team. Sponsor of the Social Studies team, Daniel Stanford also commented that he is, “extremely proud of the work and performance of these eighth-grade students.”

Not only did the Social Studies team claim the top spot, but two of the students, Clifton Daughtery and Madison Kelley, were also recognized individual top scorers in the nation.

This is a great honor for these two teams and they are helping to define excellence at Parkwood Middle School!
