Summer Reading

In her letter to educators promoting the READ NC campaign, State Superintendent of Schools, June Atkinson, notes that “summer slide” is “an alarming academic trend in which students who do not read on a regular basis during their summer break from school fall behind in reading achievement.” Research shows that reading three or more books during the summer months can stop or diminish this backward slide in achievement. In an effort to encourage reading and help get you started, we have compiled the following lists of suggested books for middle school students: the 2014-2015 Battle of the Books book list, the North Carolina Young Adult book list, and a list of books recommended by our Marvin Ridge Middle School Language Arts teachers. These lists include both fiction and nonfiction titles as well as books from all genres, but by no means are these lists exhaustive. Please note that students are not “required” to read any of these books nor are these the only books we encourage them to read. Our hope is that students will take time to find some books they enjoy and find pleasure in reading for recreation this summer.
