Parkwood Hosts the Very Special Arts Festival

After five months of planning that included many hours of soliciting donations, organizing volunteers and constructing booths, the Very Special Arts festival wowed and amazed special needs students from all over Union County on Monday, April 10th at Western Union Elementary. This year Parkwood’s chapter of the National Art Honor Society hosted the event and Ms. Bess’ Global Awareness class helped out. Parkwood art teacher, Mr. Meier, chaired the event and made sure it was a success for the over 500 volunteers and participants! Through the help of sponsors like the Union County Arts Council, UCPS, Parkwood High School, and private donations, students were able to experience art and enjoy festival activities like a moonwalk, bubbles, balloon animals, face painting, airbrushing, inflatables, and touring an ambulance and fire truck. Senior Ashton Wallace commented, “It was great to see so many kids excited about art and having fun!” Volunteers from Union County high schools (CATA, MRHS, PRHS, PWHS, SVHS) were either booth workers or were partnered up with special needs students. Student volunteers who were partnered with festival participants helped their buddy complete activities in each booth. Senior Kasey Price summed the day up with, “I really enjoyed giving these kids the opportunity to express themselves through art!”
