Football Friday: Panthers Stun Porter Ridge
Congratulations to the Panther football team for defeating the Porter Ridge Pirates in a nail biter on Friday, August 29. After trailing 20-7 at halftime, the Panthers rallied and scored with 38 seconds left in the game to defeat the Pirates in the Boneyard for the first time since November 2008. A Tweet by quarterback Cameron Tripp characterized the victory, “Memorable night!”.
"It was a tremendous effort by the team, coaches, support staff, band and fans. One of the most exciting games I have ever been associated with." is how Coach Ron Massey described Friday Night. The Panthers came from behind to defeat the Pirates, and several Panthers contributed to the scoring effort. Tripp threw a 47-yard touchdown pass to Cody Leviner, and Aaron Braswell had touchdown runs of 1 and 38 yards. Khris Missick also added a 7-yard touchdown run for the Panthers. In addition, the offensive line was impressive as another Tweet stated, “Gotta give tons of credit to that Panther O-line all night. They are a young group but you wouldn’t know it watching them tonight.” Defensively, the Panthers overcame mistakes in the first half to make several big stops in the 4th quarter. Their biggest stop came on the second to last Porter Ridge drive when they forced a muffed punt, which gave the Panthers good field position for their final scoring drive. The entire defense, from the defensive line to the safeties, showed a lot of heart, and they repeatedly shut down the Pirate offense. Special teams were also amazing on Friday as it was the blocked field goal attempt with 6 seconds to go that sealed the victory for the Panthers! A shout-out goes to Jaleel Mungo who broke through the middle to block the final field goal attempt and then was able to recover the ball to prevent the Pirates from advancing.
Reaction to the Panther win was all over Twitter. A Tweet from the Piedmont Athletic Booster Club expressed the mood Friday night: “What an absolutely incredible nail biter of a game tonight as your Piedmont Panthers traveled to the Boneyard and sunk the Pirate Ship!” According to senior Aaron Braswell, who has played the Pirates for the past three years on varsity, “It was insane! It was the most exciting game I’ve ever played in. For me personally, it has been tough fighting against Porter Ridge the past three years only to lose. To get this win as a senior is huge!”
