5th Graders Study Ecosystems
Students in Mrs. Ganc’s 5th grade class have been hard at work learning about ecosystems in science. On Wednesday, August 27th, the class had a challenge to build 3 different food chains using colored pieces showing producers, consumers, and decomposers. Then Mrs. Ganc mentioned that we could probably connect all of the food chains together to make a food web. Everyone started working on the food web right away. “After a few minutes we did not even have a whole chain ready,” said Vanessa Saiz. The group then started to talk together and work it out. Tristan Wheeler commented, “I never thought it was going to work until we got on track and things started to fall into place. We tried so many different ways and none worked until we linked everything to the sun.”
The group had to use arrows to finally show that the sun provides energy for the plants, which provide energy for the animals, which provide energy for other animals. At the end we learned that a food web is a very complex food chain. Everyone was relieved when it was over and our brains got a break from thinking that hard!
