Monroe Middle School Hosts Parenting Classes
On Wednesday nights during the month of August, Monroe Middle School hosted free parenting classes in the school Media Center. The classes were sponsored by UCPS Latino Outreach Services in partnership with Cardinal Innovations Healthcare Solutions of Concord, NC. Mrs. Helen Garcia Leak, M.Ed. led each of the classes.
The focus of the classes was the "Active Parenting of Teens" and participants were given many strategies for effective parenting.
Parents were introduced to the development of the teen-age brain and to various styles of parenting. Mrs. Leak and the participants discussed active communication techniques, such as listening actively and for feelings, looking for alternatives and evaluating consequences, and offering encouragement.
Other topics covered during the workshop included punishment vs. consequences, handling anger, and qualities of character.
The risks of social networking sites and other risky behaviors, including drugs, alcohol and violence were discussed. Parents were also given suggestions of where to seek assistance with parenting if needed.
Approximately twenty parents attended each of the four sessions offered. Anyone interested in offering the parenting classes should contact Gustavo Arevalo, UCPS Latino Outreach Coordinator at 704.226-5124.
