AIG Students Visit Barrier Island
The New Salem Elementary 5th grade AIG students recently took a three day field trip to Barrier Island Environmental Education Center on Seabrook Island, about 25 miles south of Charleston, SC. The campus includes nearly one mile of beach, 100 acres of salt marsh, 200 acres of undisturbed maritime forest, freshwater ponds, and a freshwater swamp. The trip gave the students a unique opportunity to learn about and experience nature in a way that is hands-on, memorable and a whole lot of fun.
While on the Barrier Island field trip, students had lessons in biology, ecology, conservation, astronomy, botany and more while studying the unique environment of a barrier island's salt marsh ecology. All of the experiential classes were activity oriented and based on a child’s natural curiosity about the environment. Here are a few pictures to view of the activities the children participated in while at Seabrook Island.
