Summer Leadership Camp 2014

Piedmont and Porter Ridge High School Cadets attending summer leadership camp.

Recently 26 cadets from Piedmont and Porter Ridge’s unit, AFJROTC NC-955, experienced Franklin County, Virginia's annual Eagle Challenge Summer Leadership Camp for Air Force Junior ROTC units.

There were over 150 cadets from high schools spanning 4 states along the east coast. Each cadet was randomly chosen to be in one of the 10 flights.

A normal day for cadets would start off with a 5:15 AM wake up. Afterwards cadets would have physical training, room inspections and superman drills (changing into uniforms in less than 5 minutes). All before breakfast -- which everyone eagerly looked forward to. After breakfast, each flight would separate and do different activities including everything from horseback riding to marksmanship to forestry, computers, archery, high ropes courses and more.

Flights also participated in a array of sports and team building activities. Cadets experienced many other things such as helicopter landing, firefighters, and a SWAT team demonstration.

By the end of the week all cadets were exhausted and ready to go home. On the day of departure all cadets packed up their belongings and headed over to the awards ceremony. Many of NC-955’s cadets received awards which can be seen below.

• Alyssa Smith- First place for Neatest Cadet, Most Fit Female, Top Cadet for Charlie Flight
• Kaitlyn O’Boyle, Greyson Varner, Garrett Porter, and Montei Black all received the outstanding flight award. Garrett Porter was the flight commander.
• Shelton Hebert and Sunni Outen took first place in the Jodies and Skits competition.

All in all every cadet learned a valuable lesson in leadership and teamwork. From AFJROTC to everyday life valuable lessons were taught and learned here at summer camp. As John Maxwell once said, “ A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way”.

All 26 attending cadets met at the high school upon return and received their officer and nco leadership positions for the upcoming year. The first Cadet Corps Commander for the year will be Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Maggie McBryde and the Deputy Group Commander will be Cadet Major Goodrich.
