Planting Trees at Wise Acre Farms

A representative from Union Power Company taught third grade students how to plant trees at Wise Acres Farm on Thursday, October 9, 2014.

Third Grade students visited the Wise Acres Farm on Thursday, October 9, 2014 for a special tree-planting event. The Wise Acre Farm lost oak trees during a storm this past Spring. One of the customers of the farm is also an arborist for Union Power and offered to host an arbor event at the farm. The owners of the farm have a daughter who is a third grade student at Poplin and because of this connection wanted to see if the school was interested in participating in the event. Union Power supplied four 15-inch trees to plant and also offered a fun lesson for students about tree planting and the importance of taking care of trees.

Destine Matthews, a third-grade in Patricia Murphy’s class, said she learned “Trees are important because they help us breathe and help our heart and lungs.” Another third grader, Ava Dunkel who is in Josh Roskoskey’s class, said she learned about fertilizer for trees, about the roots of trees, and things you can do to help new trees grow. But the trees weren’t Ava’s favorite part of the field trip. Her favorite part was when a few of the third-grade teachers got a chance to ride up high in Union Power’s tree bucket. The Wise Acre Organic Farm is located near Poplin Elementary on Hartis Road.
