WUES Second Graders Work Together with PWHS Beta Buddies
Our second graders had the opportunity to work with students from Parkwood High School on Thursday, October 9th, as part of the high school’s Beta Buddy program.
What is the Beta Buddy program? I am so glad that you asked!
The Beta Buddies are part of a national organization called the National Beta Club. The mission of the club is to promote the ideals of academic achievement, character, service, and leadership among elementary and secondary students. Their motto is to “let us lead by serving others”- and lead our students, they did!
The buddies came to our school and divided themselves up between the six second grade classrooms. Each classroom had 8-9 high school buddies. The older students read global picture books to our second graders, modeled how to apply reading strategies, and helped the second graders to make inferences in their reading.
After sharing the books, the students did a small art project together to create two large bulletin board displays (one in each second grade wing). At the end of their visit, the beta buddies gave every second grader a beanie baby to keep and use as reading buddies!
This was not the first year that Parkwood’s Beta Buddies have come to WUES, and we certainly hope it won’t be the last!
