J.B. Helms is Time Warner Cable Scholar Athlete
Forest Hills senior J.B. Helms was named the first Time Warner Cable Scholar Athlete of the Week for the 2014-2015 school year. To be nominated, one has to be an outstanding student who participates in varsity athletics and is actively involved in his or her community. J.B. certainly fits that criteria.
J.B. is a starting center on the Yellow Jacket offensive line for the Varsity Football team and is one of the Jackets' most competitive wrestlers. His work ethic and skill in athletics is matched in the classroom where he maintains a weighted GPA of 4.8 while taking a very challenging course load of AP, Honors, and even dual enrollment classes for college credit.
He is very involved in student life at his school. As Public Relations Chair for Student Council, he promotes student activities to encourage participation and school spirit. He is also President of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), one of the most active clubs at Forest Hills. He is a member of National Honor Society, Beta Club, and Mu Alpha Theta (the honor society for math).
J.B. graciously serves his community sometimes through his club involvement, but also on his own. He is the Union County Public Schools student liaison for the Union County Crisis Assistance Ministry Crisis Run (5K/10K). He serves on their Planning Board and actively promotes the Crisis Run in the school and the community, which is probably why Forest Hills over the last three years has had such outstanding participation. At Metheboseph Horse Farm, he has helped provide equine therapy for autistic children. He has volunteered with Special Olympics, the Christmas Bureau, Operation Christmas Child, the special needs students at Walter Bickett Education Center, and Field Day at Wingate Elementary to name a few. He received the first John Crowder Community Service Award for Union County Public Schools this year.
J.B. is the son of Kevin and Donna Helms of Marshville. He will be featured in a segment that will run on Time Warner Cable News Channel 14 for the week and will later run with other recipients statewide.
