CATA Band Performs
Students in the CATA Symphonic Band performed their annual spooky fall concert on Tuesday, October 21 in the CATA auditorium. This year’s concert, titled Diabolique, featured dark, mysterious, and spooky music by composers such as Brian Balmages, David Holsinger, and Michael Sweeney. The concert program featured some of the most demanding technical literature the CATA musicians have performed in recent years, which is a testament to the growing ability level and increasing depth of the band program here at CATA.
Student musicians dedicated one of the pieces on the program to former band director Mr. Jim Hill who was in the audience on Tuesday night. The piece, titled Prelude and Pursuit, was commissioned by the Union County Bandmasters Association in 2012 and debuted by the Union County Honor Band that same year. Mr. Hill worked closely with Michael Sweeney, the composer of the work, and the piece is inspired by Mr. Hill’s decorated career as a music educator in Union County.
Pumpkins from the third annual “Carve It Up” pumpkin carving contest adorned the front of the stage on the night of the concert. Over twenty five pumpkins were entered in either the painted or carved category and winners were announced and recognized during the concert. First, second and third place awards were given in both categories and the audience in attendance on the night of the concert voted on the “People’s Choice Award,” which went to freshman flute player Amy Kidder. Other winners included flute player Allison Schneider, trumpet player Kyle Johnson, and assistant principals Jeff Pusser and Deanna White.
Diabolique was performed for a nearly full house. Band students were pleased to see so many family, friends, teachers, and administrators in attendance. Be sure to catch the next band performance on December 12 or 13 when the symphonic band and jazz band perform as part of the performing arts department’s annual “Winter Collaborative.”
