The CHS FFA chapter participated in the State FFA Vet Science Career Development Event at Central Carolina Community College in Sanford, NC, on November 8, 2014. They placed 16th in the state out of 50 teams and 2nd in the Southwest region. Team members were Rachael Holzman, Nicole Manalis, Daniel Ruhland, and Emily Shaffer, along with adviser Ben Shumate. In preparation, the students visited Carolina Pets Animal Hospital in Wesley Chapel where they observed common veterinary practices, animal restraints, equipment identification, prescription filling, and other practices in the veterinary field.

In the competition, the vet science participants demonstrated their knowledge in all facets of the veterinary science from breed and parasite identification to clinical and handling practicums.

"I was very proud of the hard work and preparation my team put into this competition. With several students on the team who would like to pursue Veterinary medicine as a career, this event provided them with hands-on experience and a skill set that will better prepare them for the future in this industry,” said adviser Ben Shumate.

The North Carolina FFA is a youth organization of over 20,000 student members preparing for leadership and careers in the science, business, and technology of agriculture with nearly 259 local chapters across the state. FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education.
