Third Graders Receive New Dictionaries!
On Tuesday, November 19th RRES third grade students gathered in the media center for a special treat and gift from the Monroe-Union Breakfast Rotary Club. The Monroe-Union Breakfast Rotary club distributed dictionaries to the Rock Rest 3rd graders. This was part of a county wide effort between 4 different Rotary clubs in Union County to give every 3rd grader a new dictionary. More than 3200 dictionaries were distributed today throughout UCPS. Rotary is a community service organization that works throughout the world to help others. Our club awarded more than $11,000.00 to graduating seniors earlier this year as scholarships. These scholarships were based on service to the community, not grades.
Rotary has also been instrumental in helping to eradicate polio throughout the world.
The third grade dictionary project has been going on for more than 10 years.
During the distribution of the dictionary all eyes and ears were on the speakers listening to an explanation of why they were given dictionaries. The Rotary club members also explained how to use their dictionary for spelling and using creative words in their writing. They also played a word search game with the students once the dictionaries were distributed.
A student in Ms. Petit’s class said, “ I liked the part when they had us play a game because we got to search in our dictionaries for words.” (Ronesha)
Julio E. said, “They could help us in reading when we don’t know what a word means.”
The students were all very excited to receive their own personal dictionary to keep and use in the classroom. A true appreciation was shown as the students thanked the Rotary Club members for their gift!
