Sun Valley FFA Chapter Wins the NC FFA Dairy Evaluation Event
Salisbury, NC- The Sun Valley FFA Chapter participated in the 2014 North Carolina FFA State Dairy Evaluation Development Event on November 20, in Rowan County, North Carolina. Team members were Hannah Covington, Savannah Hipp, Jessica Thomas, and Sierra Simmerman. Their FFA Advisor is Dale Cochran.
At the state event, participants were scored based on how well they apply dairy cattle evaluation skills learned in the classroom. Each team evaluated 8 classes of dairy cattle and defended the reasoning behind their evaluations to a judge. Participants also completed a written test and worked collaboratively to select appropriate herd composition. Completing these activities successfully requires a good understanding of both animal science and herd management skills.
The winning team in the state event is eligible to compete in the National FFA event at the National FFA Convention in October 2015. The top three teams and high scoring individual will be recognized during the 87th North Carolina FFA State Convention in Raleigh on June 16-18, 2105.
The event is one of 43 different career development events offered to North Carolina FFA members on the state level. The North Carolina Dairy Youth Foundation sponsors the North Carolina FFA Association Dairy Evaluation Career Development Event.
