Fifth Grade Teachers

Taran Duncan, Meredith Cole,Donna Carter,Lauryn Bewlay,Hayley Turner, Adam Haas

Let’s get to know our wonderful and enthusiastic fifth grade team.  There are a few that were born and raised in North Carolina while others join the team from other states.

Lauryn Bewlay

Hi! My name is Lauryn Bewlay and I am so excited to be working at Rocky River Elementary! I am originally from New Jersey and graduated from high school there. I decided that shoveling myself out of the snow at 5am, only to get plowed back in by the snow plow man was going to stop after high school so I applied to five universities in North Carolina and two in South Carolina – that was it! J I got accepted into my first choice, UNCC and I graduated in May 2013 with a Dual Degree: Elementary and Special Education (K-6). I have always wanted to be a teacher, ever since I walked into my first day of Kindergarten and it truly has been a calling to me throughout my life. I absolutely love what I do and I wouldn’t change it for the world. I still live in the University area with my two dogs, Rosie and Fidelis. We love to be outside on the weekends to enjoy the sun and breathe in the fresh air.  Again, I feel so welcomed to be a part of the Rocky River family and to enjoy your students’ last year as Elementary students and to watch them grow in this one year to be middle-schoolers! J

Hayley Turner

Hi! I'm Hayley Turner, and this is my second year here at Rocky River. I have been teaching for 4 years, previously at Cornelius Elementary in CMS. I taught 2nd grade and then moved up to 5th grade. I love both ages of students equally, for different reasons of course, but especially enjoy the 5th grade curriculum. I am originally from Hendersonville, NC, but have lived all over the country, and even outside of the country throughout my life! A couple of my hobbies are cooking, reading, and spending time with family. I love trying out new recipes (courtesy of Pinterest!) from all over the world. My students always try to guess what I'm eating for lunch when I bring unique leftovers. I love reading, especially 5th and 6th grade books. I love being able to recommend books to my students that I have personally read, and being able to share in their excitement throughout the book! I think it is so important for my students to know that reading doesn't stop once you become an adult!  I am so glad to be a part of the RyRes family!

Adam Haas

I was born in the small town of East Aurora, about 20 minutes outside of Buffalo NY.  I am one of four brothers.  I graduated from the State University of New York at Cortland in 2007.  While there, I started all 4 years as a Defensive Lineman for the football team.  I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in childhood education.  Immediately after graduation I moved to Charlotte where I began my teaching career at Rocky River Elementary as a 5th grade teacher.  I have taught 5th grade for 7 years and 4th grade one year.  During that time I also earned my Masters degree in childhood education from Wingate University.  In my spare time I enjoy working out and cooking.

Taran Duncan

Hi everyone, my name is Taran Duncan and I have taught 5th grade for three years now.  I taught 1st grade four years before moving up to the wonderful 5th grade.  I have enjoyed teaching both grades and seeing the students grow.  I was born in Monroe, NC.  I left Monroe for a few years to go off to college at Western Carolina University.  While at WCU, I studied in Elementary Education with a focus in mathematics.  I also received a minor in Music.  I can truly call Rocky River Elementary my home and have loved watching it grow into a wonderful community of learners and leaders.

Meredith Cole

I am delighted to welcome you to the 5th grade!  I cannot wait to embark on this journey with you all.  I have lived in Union County for most of my life, and was in the first graduating class at Porter Ridge High School. I recently graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a degree in Elementary Education.  This past April I got married to my husband Caleb, and this summer we added another member to our family, Rogue, the black lab. This will be my second year teaching at Rocky River Elementary, and I will align my instruction with the goals and expectations of this fantastic school. In all that I do I will always strive to have a creative classroom environment and to push my students to be their very best!

Donna Carter

I am a lifetime resident of Union County, graduating from Monroe High School.  I attended business school after high school, but was never satisfied in that setting. In 1991 I married my husband, Randy, and I we have two daughters; Brooke and Chelsie. We live in Waxhaw, NC. In 2009 I returned to college to pursue my dream of being an elementary school teacher. I received my associate’s degree from South Piedmont Community College and my bachelor’s degree from Wingate University; graduating in May of 2014.
