Board of Education swears in four new members, one incumbent
Four new Union County Public Schools Board of Education members and one incumbent were sworn in during the Dec. 2, 2014, monthly board meeting at Waxhaw Elementary School. Union County Clerk of Court J.R. Rowell, administered the Oath of Office.
The new board members are Sharon Harrell from District 1, Gary Sides from District 3, Melissa Merrell from District 4, and at-large member Leslie Boyd. Marce Savage from District 6 was re-elected.
The newly-elected members replace outgoing board members Rev. Jim Bention, Sr. from District 1; Board Chairman Richard Yercheck from District 3; Rick Pigg from District 4; and at-large member Sherry Hodges.
Sharon Harrell from District 1 will be fulfilling the unexpired term of the late John Crowder; scheduled to end in 2016.
During the meeting, the board elected John Collins, District Five, chairman, and Leslie Boyd, at-large, vice chairman.
The Union County Public Schools system is governed by a nine-member Board of Education. Board members are elected for four-year staggered terms on a non-partisan, countywide basis. Union County is divided into six school board districts. A school board member who lives in that district represents each district.
There are also three at-large members. Voters select a school board member to represent their district as well as candidates who are running for the three at-large seats.
