Hemby Bridge Drumming Club Wins Grant

In early November, Music Teacher Beth Matthews was teaching when there was a knock on her classroom door. Waiting outside was the Union County Prize Patrol, ready to award Hemby Bridge Elementary a check for over four hundred dollars. Mrs. Matthews had applied for  a Mini-Grant from the Union County Education Foundation and was selected as one of the award recipients. The award money will be used to purchase materials and drums for Hemby Bridge’s Drumming Club.  Students will have the opportunity to join drumming ensembles that will focus on school success skills and character education through drumming traditions of Africa and the Caribbean.  Mrs. Mathews explained the importance of the opportunity to participate in drum ensembles. “Students will become stronger communicators by learning how to listen to others. Students will also learn how to lead and how to follow. Through the analysis of the rhythms and tones that make up drum ensembles, students will be developing critical thinking skills that are crucial in reading and math. In turn, students' overall self-esteem, especially as it relates to academic work, will improve,” she said.

Drumming Club will have two sessions beginning in January, with each session culminating in an evening sharing session.
