Annual Angel Tree Event
On December 5th 2014, 160 Pre-Kindergarten students were taken on a trip all around the world. These little ones, from the nine Title-1 schools from all over Union County, were brought in to the South Piedmont Community campus to attend the annual Angel Tree event, organized by the Leadership class of Union County Early College. The class selected “A Teddy Bear Christmas” theme for this year’s extravaganza. Preparations for the event had long been in the works and a custom-made Teddy Bear Christmas book had been written, illustrated, and bound in order to be read to the children. The day of the event, the children took in the sights of a room full of holiday decorations and cheer. Students from the leadership class were clothed in garments representing elves, reindeer, and international teddy bears. In a play presented to the pre-kindergarten students, a lost teddy bear got to travel with Santa Claus all around the world. Teddy and Santa stopped in various places including Jerusalem, Russia, Beijing, and Brazil.
The invited guests got to participate in sing-along songs and were surprised when they found they were gifted with their very own 2 foot teddy bear, crayons, a Teddy Bear Christmas coloring book, and a warm hat. This event allowed for many countries and cultures to be represented in order to better embody the traditions of global holidays. Not only did the Pre-K students and their teachers enjoy the event, but the entire student body of Early College had the opportunity to participate as well. It is indeed true that “a good time was had by all."
