PDMS places second in nation in duathlon
Piedmont Middle School student Alex Gaura (eighth grader) recently competed in the Powerman duathlon national championship in Florida. He had been training for this event for several months, and expected to do well. But not this well. Alex came in second place in the whole nation for athlete’s under twenty years of age.
A Duathlon is similar to a triathlon, but has different sports in it. Instead of a triathlon’s “Swim-Bike-Run” pattern, the duathlon substitutes the swim for a second run, “Run-Bike-Run”. Powerman is a race series that exists worldwide in fourteen countries. North American countries were just recently added to this, the United States and Canada. There are often not many participants in a Powerman race, because it is so hard to qualify. Alex trained very hard and was able to, however.
Alex’s very time consuming training was eventually worth it, winning him second in the nation. This was enough to qualify him for the world championship next September, in Switzerland. Alex is very excited at this opportunity, but most likely won’t attend due to school conflicts of missing the entire first week of high school. “Even though I probably can’t go, it’s exciting to think that I could if I really wanted to” says Alex.
