Greek Week 2014-15

New Salem Elementary Reading AIG students recently enjoyed the exciting world of Greek Life. AIG teacher, Dr. Beverly Little, divided the group into a fraternity and a sorority for a week-long set of competitive events. Greek Week 2014 stressed academic excellence, leadership, strong friendships, and learning outside the classroom.
To kick off Greek Week, Mrs. Carolyn Sherman, the school media specialist, shared her favorite Greek Myth. Teams then selected names and created a logo and banner. The most creative, artistic banner (keeping with the Greek Week theme) received 10 points!
On Day 2 students researched mythology in advertisement. For example, Nike for the goddess Nike. Their assignment was to write a sentence or two explaining why the company chose the name. Students had to also sketch the logo. Each submission earned five points.
On Day 3 students wrote biopoems about Greek characters. Each biopoem submission earned an additional five points for their teams.
Day 4 was a day to learn all about Hercules during station activities. Students received extra points for wearing a toga to school! After school they enjoyed popcorn and a Hercules movie.
The final day of Greek Week 2014-15 was an art-filled day. With the assistance of Mrs. Lori Burnette, New Salem’s art teacher, students designed their own creatures and described them for one final chance to earn their fraternity or sorority points. The winner of New Salem AIG’s Greek Week 2014-15 was… “Little” Caesar’s Sorority Team with 375 points! Coming in second was… the Trojans Fraternity team with 250 points!
