Sun Valley Middle Beta students enjoy gift of giving
About 80 Sun Valley Middle Beta students enjoyed the gift of giving recently when they hosted a holiday party for about 18 Wingate Elementary students.
Beta Club advisor Joyce Forbes, an eighth-grade science teacher, said the names of the elementary students were sent with their holiday wish list.
Beta students were divided into groups of about six or seven and assigned one elementary student. They were then given $50 to make those wishes come true.
“They had fun in the store buying things for their student,” Forbes said. “They then took the presents home and wrapped them.”
Forbes said the Beta students held fundraisers throughout the year in order to raise enough money to buy the Christmas presents.
On the day of the holiday party, Sun Valley students spent time with the elementary students working on a coloring book exercise and enjoying a pizza lunch. Then a very special guest, who just happened to be dressed in red, came into the room to the delight of all the children.
Natalie Hetzel, 14, a Sun Valley eighth grader, is part of the executive committee that planned the party. Hetzel said she and fellow Beta club members had been planning the party since the beginning of the school year.
“It’s so much fun to watch them open the gifts and see how excited they are,” Hetzel said. “They just love all the gifts. It’s so sweet.”
Jessica Fenyves, a guidance counselor at Wingate Elementary, thanked the students for their kindness.
“We’re really excited and grateful that some of our kids had this opportunity to have some extra attention from their big buddies here at the middle school,” Fenyves said. “It’s great that they’ll have all these great activities right before their winter break. We’re really grateful for all that Sun Valley has done for us.”
