Kindergarten and First Grade Students Learn About Holidays Around the World
The kindergarten and first grade students took a trip around the world during December to learn about how people in different parts of the world celebrate holidays in December. Each afternoon kindergarten students traveled to another classroom to learn about a particular holiday such as Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Christmas, Las Posada. Each of the classroom teachers taught a different group each day about a celebration in various locations around the globe. During Global Studies students reviewed these holidays through stories and videos then answered questions to share their learning.
First grade students learned about the celebrations in Germany, Mexico, USA, Holland and England. They wrote a few sentences about their learning and included some holidays celebrated in many places. Lights are a major part of many of the celebrations.
In Global Studies students discussed how different culture groups celebrate and that it’s important we understand that there are many ways to honor and celebrate traditions and cultures of our own yet be understanding that others may celebrate differently or not at all. Some celebrations vary according to where you live and what country you are from. As global citizens students need to be knowledgeable about customs around the world.
