Welcome Ms. Sheehan
Kelly Sheehan is the new EC (Exceptional Children) teacher for Union Elementary School. She works with students in kindergarten through 5th grade. She is from New York and recently graduated in May 2014 from the State University of New York at Cortland. She is a very enthusiastic teacher and grateful for the warm welcome to the school.
As an EC teacher, Ms. Sheehan pulls out students from their class who are having difficulty in math, reading, or writing. She may meet with a child for 30 minutes, 60 minutes, or 90 minutes per subject depending on their needs. When a student enters the EC program, they are given academic goals to work towards for a year. Ms. Sheehan specifically designs instruction for the students to meet their needs and help them grow towards those goals. Any time a student makes progress in their goals it is an exciting step.
Since teaching is geared to the student’s needs, the EC class is not like other classes in the school. When students are pulled for reading they work on comprehension or decoding skills. During writing, students are working on writing opinion letters about books. During math, students will work on their grade level work or word problems.
