East Union Students Remember the Holocaust
Seventh grade students at East Union Middle School attended the Butterfly Project located at the Jewish Community Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. During the experience, students were able to listen to a Holocaust Survivor speak and ask questions about her experience growing up in Nazi Germany. Once students finished asking questions, students listened to other survivor locals speak through video. Students collaborated on what they heard the survivors say, and presented the main points of that individuals Holocaust story with the rest of the group.
Students then ventured to an art room located at the JCC and were provided a certificate with a child’s name on it. Students decorated a ceramic butterfly in honor of the child they were provided that did not survive the Holocaust. Students then toured the Butterfly Garden, an area of the JCC dedicated in memory to the victims of the Holocaust. Students will take the acquired information from this experience, and create their own Holocaust Museum on 7th grade hall at East Union Middle School.
