Great Global Debates
Mrs. Siler’s class is learning to think globally! Her students have been reading about a whale sanctuary in the Arctic Ocean, national parks in the U.S.A., such as Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon, and efforts to save the Rainforest in the Amazon. By reading about global topics, the students have enhanced their understanding of the world around them and also learned how to understand both sides of each debate. They have created cause and effect charts, tackled difficult vocabulary, and uncovered the author’s message.
This in turn has enhanced the students' understanding of persuasive essays in their writing unit. For the persuasive unit, the students are learning how to state their position on a topic and to give valid reasons and evidence for support. Each student did research on their topic to enhance and justified their claims.
Mrs. Siler’s students are working hard, thinking globally, and becoming strong readers and writers!
