Fifth Graders Create “Mathematic Masterpieces” Using Fractional Portions
Fifth Graders have just finished their fraction unit for the year for which they studied addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of many types of fractions. To implement some arts integration and have some fun after all their hard work, students were asked to create art pieces by piecing together portions of circles that had been cut into sizes of wholes, halves, thirds, fourths, sixths, eighths, tenths and twelfths. Once all the pieces had been chosen, fifth graders were asked to use their knowledge of addition and multiplication to determine how many whole circles they had created from combining all of their pieces.
Students did a great job in creating some very abstract and symmetrical collages and even realistic interpretations of pictures such as people, boats and animals – all with just portions of circles!
