International Club Explores World Cultures
The CHS International Club, under the direction of club advisor Stacie Thompson, strives to explore other cultures and world languages through featuring different countries in their meetings each month. During meetings members and guest speakers share their experiences of world travel or their homelands as well as various foods, symbols, clothing items and memorabilia from other countries.
In December, the club meeting featured Israel. Junior Luay Marzok, a foreign exchange student visiting us this year from Israel, was one of the speakers. Senior Meredith Orrell, who has visited Israel, also spoke to the club members. Mrs. Thompson said that the two students shared very different experiences since Luay is from the northern part of Israel and Meredith had visited the southern area of Israel and that it was interesting to hear both perspectives.
“The students were very impressed with how much Luay had traveled at such a young age and how advanced he was in already knowing his career path and goals,” said Ms. Thompson. “Also – the girls thought he was cute!”
CHS is fortunate to have five foreign exchange students this year. In addition to Luay, we are also excited to have Silene Mortensen from Denmark, Maria Augusta Vieira from Brazil, Camilla Cosio from Italy, and Ernesto Rodriguez from Cuba. In addition, during March, CHS is looking forward to hosting 25 students and 2 teachers from our sister school Aarhus Katedralskole in Denmark for a week.
Future club meetings will feature many other countries including Italy and Denmark. All students are welcome to join the CHS International Club! Future dates for meetings are January 27, February 24, April 28, and May 26. Meetings are held in Ms. Thompson’s room F211. We hope to see you there!
