CATA's district Poetry Out Loud winners, Hannah Register and Noah Minsk, stand in front of CATA English teachers and staff members.

On Thursday, January 22, 2015, at 4 p.m. at Central Academy of Technology & Arts, eleven UCPS students from four schools, along with teachers, parents, and friends, came together for the District Level Poetry Out Loud Competition.

Eleven very talented contestants from Central Academy, Monroe, Sun Valley, and Weddington High Schools represented the top winners at each of their school-level competitions.

First Place district winner is Hannah Register from Central Academy who recited “Caged Bird” by Maya Angelou and “I Felt a Funeral in my Brain” by Emily Dickinson.

Hannah is a junior in Dr. Adam Tarlton’s AP Language class at CATA, and she participates in cheerleading and dance.

Second Place went to Noah Minsk, a sophomore at CATA, who recited “Zoom!” by Simon Armitage and “The Windhover” by Gerard Manley Hopkins.

By winning at the classroom, school, and district competition, Hannah will be representing Union County Public Schools at the Statewide Poetry Out Loud semifinals and finals on Saturday, March 7, 2015, held at the Greensboro Public Library, 219 North Church Street, Greensboro, N.C. 27401. This event is free and open to the public. Everyone is welcome to attend.

National Poetry Out Loud finals will be held in Washington, DC, in May.
Poetry Out Loud is supported by the N.C. Arts Council, a division of the Department of Cultural Resources, with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation.
