Waxhaw fourth graders learn about rocks and minerals

Fourth grade students take time to apply their newly learned concepts about rocks.

Waxhaw Elementary fourth graders have been enjoying their Science unit on rocks and minerals! Students have been learning about the different ways you can go about identifying minerals, like the Moh's Hardness Scale. They have also discussed the rock cycle, including how igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks are formed. Several students have even brought in their own personal rock and mineral collections to share and examine together. The topics of weathering and erosion also helped further their understanding.  The highlights were definitely the labs where they got to try and identify a mystery mineral and use Smarties to demonstrate weathering and erosion!
