Cavs Learn Through Collaboration

The CHS Global Awareness and Foods I classes teamed up to learn from each other recently. In an activity designed to become an annual tradition, Foods teacher Stefanie Carnathan and Global Awareness teacher Dustin Allen joined their classes to each teach the other what they had been learning about countries around the world and thus double their educational experience, not to mention the fun! After the Globalization class studied China and India, they shared what they had learned with the Foods class. Meanwhile the Foods students researched recipes, food customs, and meal etiquette from those same countries to teach (and serve!) their peers. The activity was designed to add a little "flavor" to what the students learned and enrich the experiences of both classes.

Mr. Allen’s students spent two days sharing their research projects about India and China with Ms. Carnathan’s students. Their presentations included news, interesting facts, video clips, and photos from each country. In return, the Foods students prepared and served native dishes in the customary fashion from each country complete with proper table settings and etiquette. Representing food from India, they prepared Indian rice pilaf and Tandoori chicken. Representing food from China, they prepared Chinese fried rice and wontons.

“The class looked forward to trying the new recipes,” said Ms. Carnathan. “The students were respectful and gave their opinions but some of the flavors, like the curry in the Indian food, were unfamiliar tastes they had not acquired. The students did a great job and we look forward to doing it again next year!”
