Parkwood's New Winter Sport! Swim Team
Last spring the Parkwood Middle School Booster Club approved the addition of a new winter sport: swimming. Over the next several months, equipment was purchased, a practice pool was secured and meets were entered. By November, more than 30 student athletes were members of the very first Parkwood Middle School Swim Team.
The team consisted of novice swimmers who had never competed before and veteran swimmers who acted as mentors. The group practiced together twice a week perfecting their freestyle, butterfly, breast and back strokes. On off days, a few even woke up at 5:00 a.m. to swim before school. Many would participate in the school’s running club as a way to build endurance. As a result, each swimmer consistently beat their times and quickly earned the respect of their team mates and those on opposing teams.
Under the guidance of four experienced coaches and two junior coaches, the swimmers also learned diving techniques and flip turns.
The swim team has enjoyed strong encouragement from the athletes’ parents. Many have shared their positive experiences with us. Below are two examples of how students have benefitted from the team.
“Our Daughter joined the swim team with no experience and she felt she was not very good. During the season she received so much positive encouragement from her coaches and teammates. She has improved and continues to beat her own time. I have seen her confidence and her overall physical fitness increase. She plans on joining the team next year and continuing on through high school. “
“This inaugural year of Parkwood Middle Schools Swim Team has been such an incredible blessing for our family. Our son has found an interest in the first competitive sport he has LOVED!! It has given him an incredible amount of self-esteem and pride to be a part of this. He cannot wait to be part of it again next year. Thank you again to all the parents and coaches that have made this possible for my son.”
The future is bright for Parkwood Middle School and its swim team. Our season recently ended, but the student athletes are already making plans to take lessons and swim in summer leagues. There can be no doubt this team will come back even stronger for the next winter season.
