East Union Boys Win Union County Basketball Tournament
On Friday, January 30th the East Union Boys basketball team won the Union County Boys Basketball Tournament. East Union carried a 12-1 record into the tourney as the regular season champs. The boys beat the Cuthbertson Cavaliers 57-40 in the first round. In the second round matchup East Union faced a big and physical Porter Ridge team in which the boys dominated from the tip-off to the final buzzer. The final score was 47-32. Nas Tyson led the team with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Jai Rorie added 16 points off of a good shooting night with 4 three-point baskets.
East Union went into the championship game versus a good Weddington team with a great big man. The boys got off to a rough start offensively but Weddington had a great game plan to slow the tempo. East Union went into halftime with a 19-18 point lead, but showed there dominance defensively which held Weddington to 12 points in the complete second half. They won the game with a final score of 45-30. The Eagles were led offensively by Nas Tyson which tied the Warriors offensive output with 12 points in the second half in the fourth quarter alone. According to head coach, Kris Kunai, "Nas is one of those special players that can turn it on at any moment with an offensive explosion which is created by his great defensive instincts and rebounding. As a coach he is one of those players that only comes around so often, but what some people don't know is that he is a better kid than a basketball player, and he will be missed greatly for that reason." Other contributors were Jai Rorie with 11points, Jaywuan McIlwain with 6 points, JahTwan Stafford with 6 points off 2 huge 3-point shots, and Keeshawn Tyson with 6 points, 4 blocks and 12 rebounds.
In reference to their season, Coach Kunai said, "Overall the boys played great all season and I was glad to showcase their talent on a big stage. I'm proud to say the least, and Coach Conklin and I will cherish all the great memories that we shared and bringing a championship to East Union for the first time since Union County started hosting a playoff tournament in 2009-2010 season."
