Sardis Elementary Students Visit "The World in Our Backyard!"
The “World In Our Backyard” is an organization based in Charlotte, North Carolina that provides unique in-house field trip experiences for students at school sites. The tour guides provide interesting cultural exhibits where children become active participants. The group brings displays, costumes and instruments for the children to experience. Students are taught about the geography and cultures of various countries across the globe. The group from “World in Our Backyard” visited Sardis Elementary School recently. Students in several grade levels got to learn about Africa, Italy and China as well as Native Americans. Teachers can choose from a variety of countries and cultures tailored to their curriculum.
Kindergartners and second Graders focused on Africa as part of the recognition of African American History Month. The visitors from “World in Our Backyard” taught the students about the animals and agriculture of Africa as well as cultural aspects including music. The students donned traditional African garb and participated in dancing and playing instruments. The boys and girls learned that the people often dance in celebration of a good harvest. The teachers at Sardis have been very positive about the quality of the presentations. In-house field trips have become popular in recent years as the cost of transportation has risen. There is also less instructional time lost by having groups come to schools versus having to leave campus. Hosting organizations like “World in Our Backyard” is a win-win situation for all involved.
