Rock Rest Elementary receives 2015 NCASCD Lighthouse Award
Rock Rest Elementary School has received the 2015 North Carolina Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (NCASCD) Lighthouse School Award.
The school was chosen from across North Carolina on Feb. 5, 2015, for innovative programs and practices that demonstrate results. Each winning school received a plaque and a check for $1,000, a professional photograph and three comp teacher memberships to NCASCD.
Rock Rest principal Kristy Thomas and several members of her staff were recognized by the Board of Education during their Feb. 3 regular board meeting held this month at Sardis Elementary.
“We are proud of our staff and the level of commitment and care that they provide the children of Rock Rest,” Thomas said. “Also, we are proud of the community and how they help us serve our families. Lastly, we appreciate our families and their dedication to their children."
Assistant Superintendent for Instructional Programs Dr. John Jones said the school system and community are proud of this award attained by the faculty and staff of Rock Rest Elementary.
“Rock Rest strives to build a sense of community and accomplishment with all, helping each student to blossom in their own special way and gain academic readiness skills along with developmental and social skills,” Jones said. “Leaders and teachers work tirelessly to make sure children do not fall through the cracks and aim to develop students by ‘stretching them,’ praising them, and expecting them to be successful.”
As for why the school was recognized, Thomas said, “I think it is because we reflect the values inherent in all Union County Schools and that is we want the best for every child in our building. We believe that our children can achieve grade-level status and above. We want every child to see their potential and we work hard to help each one."
