Author Debbie Wiles Visits Marvin!
The week of January 12, 2015 was a very exciting one for Marvin Elementary school. Students, teachers and administration spent the entire week working and learning with Ms. Debbie Wiles. Ms. Wiles is an award winning author of several books for children and young adults.
Ms. Wiles visited Marvin last spring for the first time as a visiting author. She returned to work with our entire staff in the area of writing in August and most recently shared her writing talent and love of writing with our Marvin students. Ms. Wiles met with grade level teachers prior to sessions with students to ensure her time with students was tailored to the needs of students as directed by their teacher! Some groups focused on character development and others used mentor texts to highlight various strategies writers use to strengthen their craft. The experience was both unique and powerful!
What a treat it was to watch her work with our students, teachers and administration. Her message was clear, “Writers write from what they know, what they feel and what they can imagine.” She created conditions for all students to put this message into their writing, no matter what type of writing they were engaged in.
Wow, our kids have so much to say! Everyone was most impressed and proud of their work!
