Valentines for Vets

James Reese and Candace Purcell, Student Council co-sponsors, introduced the project to the Student Council as part of a community service project.  The Student Council members voted unanimously to promote this as a school-wide project. The classroom teachers were asked to have their students make the Valentines for Vets cards. The project was a success and was enjoyed by the students. Some teachers presented a lesson about Veterans to their students and shared the book “H is for Honor” before making the Valentine cards so that the students understood why they were making the cards and who they were making them for.

The cards were decorated for Valentine’s Day and included words of thanks and inspiration. Many of the cards thanked the Veterans for their service to our country and demonstrated an attitude of respect for our country’s Veterans.
Richard Mitchells, with the Charlotte Marine Corps League Detachment 750, came to the school on Friday, February 6, to talk with the Student Council and thank them for their assistance with the project. He arranged for the delivery of the cards to Veterans in North Carolina. The cards will be delivered to the Wounded Warriors Barracks at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
A big thank you goes out to all students, staff, and the administration, Mrs. Jennifer Hoover, Principal, and Ms. Emily Ness, Assistant Principal, for all their support throughout this project!
