Global learning using maps and globes
What is the difference in using a map or a globe? First grade students have been learning about using them to locate landforms in their global area of focus. They got experience in creating a map key and using salt dough to make various landforms in recent social studies lessons.
They had the opportunity to compare landforms for countries in Africa by using a map of Africa and using salt dough and a key to show landforms in Africa. Teachers shared a sample map with the students first and had a flipchart comparing maps and globes. You can see it has peaks for the mountain that area is going to be green. The oceans are going to be blue and the other landform will be white. Students showed mountains, rivers, oceans and other landforms with their salt dough maps. They shared work with classmates then they paired up with other first grade classmates to share their learning about maps and globes and landforms specific to their area.
