Brett Underwood Wins State Wrestling Championship
Congratulations to Brett Underwood, who is the 132 lb. North Carolina 3A State Wrestling Champion! The State wrestling tournament was held on February 27-28 at the Greensboro Coliseum. Fellow Panther wrestler Thomas Flitz wrestled through the consolation bracket to place third in the State at the 152-lb. weight class. Overall, the Panther wrestling team placed 11th at the State tournament.
Underwood finished off a remarkable 2015 campaign with a 56-1 record and a State championship at 132 pounds. Brett has been dedicating himself to this goal since he finished 6th at the state tournament last year as a sophomore. Brett is a Captain and looks to lead the team next year as he seeks to defend his state title. Brett won his third All-Conference award this year, as well as winning the 3A Midwest Regional Championship. Brett achieved his 100th career victory earlier this year and has his sights set on reaching 200 by the end of his Senior Campaign. He is 55 wins short of that goal. Brett looks to wrestle collegiately after high school, and he is hoping an All-American performance at Junior Nationals will entice offers from Division I colleges. According to Underwood, "I am honored to bring such a prestigious award (State Title) back to Piedmont High School. I've worked really hard during the off season to accomplish that goal, I plan on working even harder this summer to defend my title and accomplish my National goals."
Thomas Flitz finished this season with a 47-4 record and finished third at the State championships at 152 pounds. This has been a remarkable year for Thomas with numerous victories to include a championship at the Tiger Holiday classic in December and his second All-Conference selection last month. Thomas suffered an early defeat at the State tournament but battled back with five consecutive victories to claim third place. Thomas won his 100th career match at the Conference tournament in January, and he looks to pursue a spot on the top of the podium next winter. Thomas plans to wrestle collegiately after high school. He has talked with several colleges and hopes to add to that list with a good performance at Junior Nationals at the end of March. According to Flitz, "It was a fun season a lot of good memories were made. Now I know what I need to work on I plan to work hard all off season to get to the top next year."
Congratulations to both Brett Underwood and Thomas Flitz on their State championship wrestling performances. In addition to Underwood and Flitz, Austin Purser and Tyler Scott also qualified for the 3A State wrestling tournament in Greensboro.
