Teacher of the Year

Mrs. Gaines, Literacy Interventionist, is Rocky River's Teacher of the Year! Mrs. Gaines is a native of Wilson, North Carolina and attended college at North Carolina A&T State University where she majored in Elementary Education. Additionally she has completed postgraduate programs at the University of North Carolina Charlotte and Converse College where she majored in Curriculum & Instruction and Reading. Mrs. Gaines is currently continuing her education at Northeastern University where she serves as a student ambassador for adult learning.

Mrs. Gaines has served the students of Rocky River for the past 5 years, first as a Reading Recovery teacher and now as a Reading Interventionist. She began working for Union County Public Schools in 2007 and has worked in education for 14 years. Prior to working for UCPS she was a first-grade teacher for Guilford County Schools. Mrs. Gaines states " I started teaching while I was a student in elementary school when I pretended to teach classroom lessons to my dolls."

She loves being an educator and helping students become better readers. She believes that early literacy is important for the educational foundation of all students. In her spare time, she loves to watch television, shop, and do interior decorating. Two items on her bucket list are that she would like to publish a children's book and vacation in Hawaii.

The staff of Rocky River chose Mrs. Gaines as their Teacher of the Year for her dedication to her students and the support she gives her coworkers each day.
