Mazen Named State Champion
CHS is very excited to announce a new state champion in the Cavalier family! Senior Jesse Mazen has been named the 2015 NCHSAA 3A State Champion in Diving! He won the men’s 1 meter spring board competition. The event took place February 12 at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary, NC. Jesse has been diving almost eight years and just moved to CHS last August from Florida.
In preparation, Jesse shared that he traveled to Huntersville 4-5 times a week for practice where he did conditioning drills on the trampoline and mats and practiced his dives in the water.
“At the competition, I was so nervous that I was shaking but after I performed my first dive my nerves settled and I knew it was going to be a great meet,” he said.
“I set a record of 380.8 points. There was no previous record at Cuthbertson but I did beat my previous state score by 70 points!”
Jesse said that he credits his parents for his success and considers his dad, who was a collegiate diver, a role model. He also credits his former coach and two-time Olympian Chris Colwill and his current club coach Brandon Robinson. The CHS swimming and diving coaches are Monica Laux and Karen Ponikvar.
Ms. Laux said, “Jesse works so hard, and he absolutely deserved that win!”
“Ms. Laux and Ms. Ponikvar were very supportive and they made me feel very welcome to be part of the swim and dive team!” said Jesse.
Jesse plans to attend UNC-Wilmington in the fall and major in special education and psychology and then earn a Master’s in Applied Behavior Analysis with a concentration in autism.
“I hope to be an asset to the UNCW dive team and continue to improve throughout the rest of my career,” said Jesse.
“I’m not sure if I have a favorite part of diving, but maybe it would be the feeling I get when I successfully learn a new dive. When I finish the new dive I’m ecstatic and can’t help but smile – the feeling is incredible. You feel like you can accomplish anything!”
So how did he feel when he won?
“It felt amazing! It was a great way to end my high school diving career!” he said.
Congratulations, Jesse – we are so proud of you!
