Odyssey of the Mind Team Headed to State Competition
On Saturday, March 7 Piedmont Middle School's Odyssey of the Mind team participated in the North Carolina Central Region Tournament. They were one of seventeen teams in their problem and received 3rd place! One team member, seventh grader Ian York, received a Ranatra Fusca award for creativity thanks to his technical "know-how" and how he was able to help the team incorporate it into a problem that is typically based more on performance and artistry.
Students on the team had been working since October on solving a problem based on the myth of Pandora's Box. Through Odyssey of the Mind, students are encouraged to use creativity and imagination to create a short performance of 8 minutes or less that fulfills certain specific requirements, stays within a specific budget of $125 or less, write a script and create their all of their own costumes, props and set pieces.
Piedmont's team had to tell the original story of Pandora's box in a short opening prologue and then create a new version of Pandora's Box with a video game setting. They also had to include a gamer character, 3 evils including one that was team created, a meter that measured the gamer character's energy at each level, sounds for the beginning and end of a level, a membership sign that looked like a video game console and a box that would be scored on artistic quality in the prologue.
Piedmont's OM team includes Rachel Phillips, Sarah Marcum, Ian York, Ethan Solomon, Alyson Byrd, Caroline Ogden and Heather Leis. Coaches are Ms. Gallagher and Ms. Sutton. The team will be headed to App State in Boone for the State Competition on April 11.
