Parkwood Places in the Top Three in the UCPS Battle of the Books Competition
Parkwood Middle School’s 2015 Battle of the Books members were all smiles Monday afternoon as they were awarded the 3rd Place title for the district’s yearly competition. The team’s 8 members, comprised of all grade levels, worked extremely hard for the event and their hard work definitely paid off--missing second place by only 1 point!
Team members were given a list of 27 books to read for the Battle of the Books competition. The team met on a weekly basis at first and transitioned to a daily meeting time as the competition date neared. With the help of their 2 coaches, Lisa Chapman and Kelly King, the students discussed the different books and prepared for the event with practice questions relating to each of the books.
“I am so proud of this team and all of their hard work! They did a fantastic job!!” said Lisa Chapman, Media Coordinator at PWMS. “They are a great group of kids! The judges and audience were quite impressed with the team’s performance especially when they answered questions in unison because they had learned so much about the books!”
The district level Battle of the Books competition takes place once a year at the Professional Development Center and the winner of the district level goes onto the state competition. The 2015-2016 Battle of the Books list is already out. The students are already looking forward to next year. Any Parkwood student interested in participating on the Battle of the Books team should contact Mrs. Chapman in the media center.
