Rainy Run for the Ridge a wet success!
A cold, early morning rain did not deter the nearly 300 participants in the 4th Annual Run for the Ridge 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run on Saturday, March 14. The race is a fundraiser for all Marvin Ridge Cluster Schools, and runners of all ages could be seen on the rain course and in the fun run. Vendors filled the Marvin Ridge High School atrium both before and after the race, and no one seemed to miss the stadium setting or the sunshine.
The event began with a special presentation and moment of silence as the planning committee decided to dedicate this year’s race to Shirley Wang, a Marvin Ridge family member who recently lost her battle with cancer. Shirley was an avid runner and supported last year’s race as a volunteer. Her husband George, spoke to the crowd and then a moment of silence was led by Marvin Ridge High School principal Donna Cook.
The first runner to cross the finish line was 14 year old Drew Staley of Charlotte with a time of 18:13. Within the hour, all runners completed the course, and the awards ceremony was led by run organizer Terri Patton and four principals from the cluster: Mrs. Cook, Lynn Cole of Marvin Elementary, Jim Eversole of Sandy Ridge Elementary, and Jay Jones of Marvin Ridge Middle. Awards were presented to the top three in all age groups. Final results will be posted through Queen City Timing on the official run website, www.marvinrunfortheridge.com. The fun-filled morning ended with silent auction and raffle winners taking their prizes. We would like to thank all of the participants, vendors, and sponsors for your continued support of this event. We are grateful for the members of the organizing committee for their time and efforts as well. For a full list of sponsors, check out
