First graders welcome very special guest reader

First graders listen as a local author reads to them for Read Across America Day.

On Thursday, March 5th Ms. Gainer’s first grade class welcomed a very special author for Read Across America week. Ms. Gainer’s class was delighted to have a local author, Debra Dickson visit the classroom. Debra came to read her newly released children’s picture book, Brody Brocken and his Epic Bike Trek. Her book is a wonderful story about a young boy and his adventurous journey around the world. Mrs. Dickson’s book was created based on her personal travels with her family during their 2-year stay in Glasgow, Scotland. Whitney Martin, a Disney/Fox animator and storyboard artist, is the illustrator of Mrs. Dickson’s book.

When Mrs. Dickson came to the classroom she began by reading her book to the children. She asked them many questions throughout the read aloud. After she was finished reading the book she showed the students pictures of the actual places that the fictional character traveled to during the story. The first graders were fascinated by Mrs. Dickson’s real life pictures of her travels in Rome, Paris, London, and beyond.

Ms. Gainer’s class is very grateful that Mrs. Dickson was able to read with them! They had a wonderful time learning about many different countries as well as what it is like to be an author.
