Piedmont Designated as International School
For the second consecutive year, Piedmont has been recognized as an International School by UCPS. To obtain this designation, teachers and students have demonstrated that they are devoted to providing an atmosphere of appreciation and understanding of diverse cultures. According to Angie Medlin, a UCPS Global Teacher, “In the global world that students are growing up in, it is important that we foster an environment at Piedmont that inspires our students to recognize and appreciate various cultural backgrounds so they will be prepared to interact in our global society.”
As part of the process to be designated as an International School, teachers submit evidence that they regularly incorporate global activities into their curriculum. For example, the Foods classes in the Career & Technical Education Department did a unit of study on how certain ethnic foods evolved to become part of the American diet. Students studied the background and prepared dishes such as hamburger goulash (Eastern European origin) and pizza (Italian origin). Likewise, World History classes watch CNN Student News on a regular basis to help students better understand world events and how they impact America. In addition, clubs such as the American Sign Language Club adopted a sister school in Honduras, and Piedmont students collected socks and undergarments for these children. Each year, Piedmont hosts an International Week in which all stakeholders get involved with activities such as a door decorating contest, guest speakers, and multicultural menus prepared by the cafeteria staff.
One of the highlights for the Piedmont cluster has been the annual International Festival held at Unionville Elementary. This event is widely attended by both students and parents and is an opportunity for students and staff to participate in multicultural activities such as food tasting, games, fashion show, and music. On April 30, 2015, Piedmont and Unionville Elementary will once again collaborate to present the 4th annual International Festival. The hours will be from 6:30-8:00 and will be held at Unionville Elementary. Everyone in the Piedmont community is invited to attend.
